Pope Francis’ message for the World Day of the Poor invites us to reflect and act as we prepare for the Jubilee of 2025. In the face of global challenges such as war, the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the climate crisis, he calls for renewed hope and solidarity with the poor.

The Pope emphasises that this year ahead should be a year of prayer and preparation, urging us to listen deeply to the prayers of the poor and respond spiritually and practically. He reminds us that authentic prayer must flow into concrete acts of charity, stating, “If prayer is not translated into concrete action, it is in vain; however, charity without prayer risks becoming philanthropy which soon runs out.” This message is a call to action, encouraging individuals, parishes, and dioceses to nurture initiatives that provide both material and spiritual care to those in need.

Caritas Brentwood is inviting all those in the Diocese to remember that we are called not only to hear but to respond—to extend a hand of support, to build bridges of empathy, and to foster a community where the marginalised find solace and hope. Over the winter months, may we open our doors, share what we can, and ensure that no one feels forgotten or abandoned. Pope Francis is calling each of us to social action to ensure we never lose sight of the poor or the most vulnerable among us.

Together, through prayer and loving service, we can bring hope and healing to our Diocese. We encourage you to share with Caritas Brentwood the initiatives your parish is offering this winter – whether it’s soup kitchens, night shelters, foodbank collections, clothing drives, safe spaces, or other creative solutions. By gathering this information, we can better direct those in need from your local areas to the most effective sources of support.

With blessings,

Siân Thomas-Cullinan (Director of Caritas Diocese of Brentwood)
